Let’s go back to the song that started it all. “Rehab” was the moment I knew Glee would be special! The show choir look and sound! That dancing! Those dresses! It was a beautiful moment and one I like to relive over and over (and over and over) on Youtube!
Which is why I’m crazy excited that Vocal Adrenaline is playing a much bigger role in the back nine episodes of Glee!
(Sadly, the VA version of Rehab isn’t up on Youtube, so here’s a fun fan video using the song!)
Amy Winehouse originally recorded this breakout hit in 2006 bor her album Back to Black. It was a huge hit, winning three Grammy awards in 2008: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

March 22nd, 2010Guest Stars, PollsAfter Neil Patrick Harris, there’s one person everyone wants to see on Glee: Justin Timberlake. Ryan Murphy recently admitted it’s in the works for season two.
“[Justin] is the one the kids jump up and down about every day and beg me to meet with him,” he told E! News. “I’m a huge fan of his music… we’d love to have him on. We start shooting the second season in July and I think I will work some magic around that time for him if I can.”
Justin’s a talented guy, but who would he play on the show? Some suggestions:
Someone’s older brother
He can play an older brother and former glee club star who’s a few years younger than Will Schuester. He went to Los Angeles and after years of working hard, is on the verge of making it big. He comes home to visit his parents and Will asks him to visit New Directions to give them some inspiration, but the shining star turns out to be a creepy egomaniac who lies to Will, tries to seduce Rachel and more.
A new teacher in school
Justin can play a first year teacher who’s about to replace Will as the coolest, dreamiest teacher in school. Will gets jealous as students and teachers alike fan over this new hottie. However, things aren’t always what they seem and it turns out Justin finds being the golden boy and teaching every day amazingly difficult. He turns to Will for advice and both receive a valuable life lesson.
Himself
If New Directions goes to a competition in New York, Justin can be the surprise celebrity judge. ‘Cause we all know he got his start in a glee club!
What do you think? Should JT do a stint on Glee?

March 18th, 2010Guest Stars, PollsWith Ryan Murphy’s new film Eat, Pray, Love set to hit theatres in August, the buzz around town that Julia Roberts, the film’s star, is the latest celebrity who “wouldn’t mind” a guest spot on Glee.
“She saw the rough cuts and fell in love with the show,” Ryan Murphy told The Sun. “I don’t know if Julia’s going to do it – maybe.”
This is more subtle than the blatant calls for guest stints we’ve heard from Taylor Swift and Katharine McPhee, but still. Who would Julia play? Here’s some ideas:
Will’s dad’s girlfriend
Will’s dad has tons of confidence thanks to his enrollment in law school. It’s given him a new lease on life. As a result, he feels younger and more energized and wants a lady on his arm to reflect that. But Will’s dad is a classy guy. He doesn’t need a twenty-five year old floozy hanging off his arm. Oh no. His lady of choice is his thirty-eight year old law professor.
Someone from Sue’s past
Julia’s character is a few years younger than Sue. She was the freshman who adored senior Sue and wanted nothing more than to be her friend. Sue relished the attention, but then, at the last minute, betrayed Julia. And now, as the school’s new vice-principal, she’s back for revenge.
A love interest for Burt Hummel
Burt’s a good gay who deserves a beautiful and understanding gal on his arm. Julia meets him after getting her car fixed in his shop and takes an interest. Burt, who hasn’t dated since Kurt’s mom died, is confused by this attention from a gorgeous woman. Kurt, while confused about this, wants what’s best for his dad and helps him out. Can we say Hummel makeover?
What would you want Julia to do on Glee? Do you even want to see her on the show?

I know the Glee music showdown was MIA last week, but it’s back! We’re returning with an oldie but goodie, “Bust a Move.” Will sings this song with the whole Glee gang in “Mash-Up”in an effort to loosen New Directions up and have them start thinking about unexpected mash-ups.
The Glee version is pure cheese, but it’s one of their better renditions of a 80s/90s songs Glee has covered.
Young MC released the original “Bust a Move” in 1989, when it reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
I’ll admit, I voted for the original. As good a job as Glee did with the song, I like the vibe and attitude of the 89 version better. What about you?

“Don’t Rain on MY Parade” was arguably the biggest number in the first half of Glee. It was both Ryan Murphy and Lea Michele’s ultimate song choice, Lea killed it and it saved New Directions at sectionals. I listen to this song all the freaking time, it’s so good!
Barbra Striesand originally recorded this song for her 1964 musical and 1968 film Funny Girl. It’s now a Streisand signature. In a weird Gleeful connection, Idina Menzel, Lea’s doppleganger and future Glee guest star, performed this song at the Kennedy Honors concert for Barbra a few years ago.
I love Barbra’s voice and don’t think anyone can compare. However, the arrangement for Lea’s version is superb. Adam Anders should be proud of himself. That said, Lea wins for me by a teeny margin.

“This Is How We Do It” was the first song recorded by Acafellas, the bizarre group made up of Will, Ken, Henri, Sandy and Howard Bamboo. The Glee version was never released as a single and a video doesn’t exist on YouTube. Sadly, this is all I have for comparison:
Montell Jordan originally recorded this song in 1995. It was his debut single and it shot to the top of the charts, making Montell the first solo male artist to have a debut single reach #1.
I picked Montell, only because I can’t find a better Glee version. If I could, I’m sure the Acafellas would take home the win!

Will Schuester sang a beautiful version of “Leaving on a Jet Plane” in the director’s cut version of the pilot. I’m still disappointed it didn’t make the regular pilot, as it’s one of the few times Will gets to showcase his pipes in a non-cheesy manner. I’d much rather stuff like this from Schue than embarrassing ’90s rap.
“Leaving on a Jet Plane” was written and recorded by the late, great John Denver in 1966. However, it didn’t become a hit until Peter, Paul and Mary recorded it in 1969, becoming the band’s only hit. However, it forever embedded Peter, Paul and Mary in the minds of music fans everywhere.
I voted for both. Nothing can top the original version, but I love what Will did with the song-and what the song did for his character.

Let’s push this Glee music showdown up a notch, shall we? Oh, I’m so witty. Today, we have the fantabulous “Push It” ready to battle. Rachel, Finn and the rest of the original gleeks sang this racy diddy in front the entire school in “Showmance.” How they didn’t get suspended, I’ll never know.
Sat ‘n’ Pepa originally released this song in 1987. It was their first mainstream hit and was named #9 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.
The original song is so good, but Rachel did such a good job rapping. And the dance moves? You can’t ignore those! So Glee (barely) wins for me.

We learn Finn can sing in that now-classic Glee moment: Finn jamming in the shower. The drumming is adorable. Here’s the song that started it all. (I know there’s an official single, but I can’t pass up the chance to share this scene!).
REP Speedwagon released “Can’t Fight This Feeling” in 1984. It was their second #1 hit and established the group as an iconic 80s rock band.
I’ll admit, I voted for both! Finn’s version is great, but nothing can top the over-the-top power ballads of the ’80s.

Rachel and Finn sing “Smile” when they are prepping for the yearbook photos in “Mattress.” Considering that the song is about feeling good after your boyfriend betrays you, it’s kinda an odd choice, but Finn and Rachel make it work!
Lily Allen released this song as her debut single in 2006 from her album Alright Still. It didn’t do well on the charts (#49 on the Billboard Hot 100), but scored with digital downloads.
I didn’t like the original and am not in love with the Glee version either. Oh well. You can’t love every song you see on Glee!
