February 12th, 2010MusicMercedes (and the rest of the minorities aka Sue’s Kids) brought it in “Throwdown” when Sue gave them Jill Scott’s fabulous R&B song to sing. As evil as Sue is, her criticisms of Will’s methods are often bang-on. More R&B? Bring it!
(The very best part of this video? Sue’s dancing.)
“Hate on Me” was originally written and released by the wondrous Jill Scott. The single appeared on her fifth album The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3. Love Jill, love this song.

December 26th, 2009MusicSince today is Boxing Day, I guess it’s appropriate that today’s Twelve Days of Glee selection is Mercedes’ “Hate on Me.” The song took place in a regular New Directions practice, after Sue Sylvester becomes the club’s co-director and divides the group along the lines of race, class, abilities, and sexual orientation. Sue’s group, consisting of “”Santana! Wheels! Gay kid! Asian! Other Asian! Aretha! And Shaft!,” does a pretty fantastic rendition of this song.
I love how subtle and appropriate so many of the song selections are. “Hate On Me” could easily apply to all the discrimination and adversity this group faces on a daily basis. It’s been a recurring theme throughout the show, as accessibility for Artie and Mercedes’ always playing second fiddle to Rachel are plot points that come up again and again.
I love Sue’s little dance near the piano! Jane Lynch is the best!
