The seventh installment of 10 Artists Worthy of a Glee Tribute is none other that probably the cheesiest, most over-the-top band of all time: ABBA.

    Abba

    Why ABBA?

ABBA’s music is cheesy superfun pop. I can just see the Glee kids performing these songs. It will be impossible to watch without a smile on your face! ABBA was also the first band to have an entire Broadway musical built around their catalogue. Broadway is extremely important for show choirs and it’s a venue that Glee hasn’t explored enough. Mr. Schue can use ABBA as an example of versatility and transcending boundaries, sending New Directions on a quest to find the next Broadway-musical worthy artist and developing a story around the songs.

    The Playlist

    Mama Mia! (New Directions)
How can ABBA’s most famous song (and the title of their musical) not be sung by everyone? It can be the first song Mr. Schue assigns everyone and they perform it in the choir room to get a feel for what ABBA is all about.

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) (New Directions girls)
When Mr. Schue announces the ABBA project, the boys, as usual, get upset, but the girls, led by Rachel, are excited and perform this number, one that is both empowering and completely teasing of the boys, while also urging them to loosen up and get in on the ABBA cheesiness.

    Knowing Me, Knowing You (Will/Emma, Rachel/Finn, Tina/Artie)
ABBA’s ultimate break-up song needs to be performed a la “Like a Virgin” after all these characters get into big relationship fights.

Take a Chance on Me (New Directions)
Kurt would be my choice for lead vocal on this, but with all the harmonies, how is this not a group number?

Money, Money, Money (Principal Figgins, Brenda Castle, Emma Pillsbury and Sue Sylvester)
When Principal Figgins hears of Mr. Schue’s ABBA assignment, it comes out that he’s a closet ABBA fan. Cue: fantasy sequence about how hard he works with back-up courtesy of the school’s female teachers.

Honey, Honey (Quinn, Brittany and Santana)
Mr, Schue realizes that now, more than ever, Quinn needs her friends back. He “randomly” assigns Quinn, Brittany and Santana to work on the ABBA project together and this performance is what they come up with.

    S.O.S (Finn)
Not only would this song be a departure vocally for Finn, he could sing it after realizing he was in the wrong with Rachel. By singing it in the choir room in front of everyone, he hopes Rachel will be impressed by such a grand gesture and come back to him.

    Dancing Queen (New Directions boys)
All the boys are enthralled with someone and, after the “Gimme Gimme Gimme” debacle, decide to one-up the girls by performing the most epic arrangement of “Dancing Queen” of all time.

    Waterloo (New Directions)
This song, about giving in to a higher power, can be New Directions’ big finale song. After exploring ABBA for an entire week, they realized they all love the ABBA and are now fans of the band and the musical.

If you missed them, check out the posts on Michael Jackson, Cher, The Rolling Stones, Stephen Sondheim, Queen and Bruce Springsteen.

We’re more than halfway there! Number six on the 10 Artists Worthy of a Glee tribute is none other than the Boss!

Bruce The Boss Springsteen rocks Glasgow's Hampden Park

    Why Bruce Springsteen?

    1) He’s one of the most successful recording artists of all time. 2) They don’t call him the boss for nothing. 3) He’s probably the most perfect artist ever for Finn to cover. Let’s face it: he’s the man. So, how would the Boss fit into Glee? Well, New Directions has been getting a little girly. Barbra, Madonna, show tunes…they need to man up. Add that to the fact they all hate Lima and Will decided to give them the one-two punch of picking an artist that perfect conveys Middle America with a rocker that is all man. This whole episode can be an exploration of what it is like to grow up in a small working-class town.

    The Playlist

Glory Days (Will, Sandy, Ken and Henri)
At the student/talent shoe practices Will and the guys realize they’ve never had it as good as they did in high school. Acafellas reunites to sing a song about exactly that.

    Thunder Road (Finn)
Rachel and Finn are having trouble (as always) and Finn sings this to work through his emotions.

    Born in the U.S.A (Finn)
How can Finn not sing this song as a tribute to his dad? How?

The River (the New Directions boys)
This would probably be the most appropriate song for the themes I’ve outlined. I’d like to see Will make the boys sing it a la “What It Feels Like for a Girl,” stripped down and touching.

Dancing in the Dark (New Directions)
Another poignant song about living in Middle America. I think this song would work really well if everyone traded off verses, especially Rachel, Kurt, Puck, Finn, Jesse, Quinn and Tina.

Atlantic City (Rachel w/ ND back-up)
Rachel, for her Springsteen assignment, would obviously go for one of Springsteen’s more devastating and vocally challenging songs.

    My Hometown (Kurt)
Considering the first verse is about a father/son, this makes it the obvious choice for Kurt to make. He wants to get out of Lima, but his feelings about getting out is conflicted because his dad is there, loves it and considers it home. By rejecting Lima, Kurt, in some way, is afraid that he’s rejecting his father.

    Badlands (Quinn)
Out of everyone in New Directions, Lima has been meanest to Quinn. She had it all, but then the town took it all away when she got pregnant. This song about a man down on his luck who wants a second chance and a better lot perfectly encapsulates Quinn’s current situation.

    Born to Run (New Directions)
This can be the episode ender. Even after the explore their feelings for Lima, everyone in New Directions decides their best bet is to get the hell out.

If you missed them, check out the posts on Michael Jackson, Cher, The Rolling Stones, Stephen Sondheim and Queen.

    May 5th, 2010Erin (Glee Dork)Bad Reputation

Glee is back! I’d argue that last night’s episode was my favorite one since the spring premiere. It was funny, it had drama and it didn’t try too hard. It simply wanted to be a fun episode and it worked.

Here’s my first 10 thoughts after watching the episode:

    1) Puck and Rachel

How well done was this? Once Ryan Murphy started going on about how he was going to give the Puckleberry shippers what they wanted, I was terrified. But this scene worked so well. Rachel and Puck still have tons of romantic tension, but both stayed true to themselves. Loved this.

    2) Physical

This was cute, but why would they do two video remakes back-to-back? They could’ve saved this for another episode.

    3) Molly Shannon

Both the guest stars, Olivia and Molly, fit into the show seamlessly. The fact Brenda Castle was Molly Shannon enhanced the character but didn’t take away from the plot at all. Excellent use of a guest star!

    4) Run Joey Run

They may have hyped the “Physical” video but this is what should become YouTube gold.

    5) Cheerios uniforms?

Mercedes and Kurt didn’t wear their Cheerios uniforms when they were being interrogated by Mr. Schuester, and it drove me mad!

    6) Sue’s sister

Another touching and beautiful scene. You really believe this side of Sue and I almost cry every time.

    7) Sue’s advice

No matter the reasons Sue gives advice, the advice itself is always good. Emma does need to grow a spine and stand up to Will. He’s not treating her with the respect she deserves. And good for her to again turn Will down because she knows she deserves better than that!

    8 ) The Music

This might be my favorite episode soundtrack ever. I love the cheese factor.

    9) Heather Morris

Is the mot fierce dancer ever. My jaw dropped during “Ice Ice Baby” and “U Can’t Touch This.”

    10) Kurt

Is a bit evil, and a lot opportunistic. Watching his development has been interesting. He’s increasingly becoming less and less likable but more and more fascinating.

Today brings us the fifth installment of 10 Artists Worthy of a Glee Tribute Episode! On the agenda? The band to trump all bands, Queen!

    Queen In Stockholm

    Why Queen?

Glee has already done one Queen song (“Somebody to Love”) and completely nailed it! So why not more? Queen and their frontman, Freddy Mercury, brought theatricality and originality to the stage in a way no band has ever done before. And they gave us some of sports’ greatest anthems. Freddy Mercury faced a lot of adversity in his life. The Queen episode could be about being true to yourself, both personally and professionally. Queen experimented a lot with arrangements with their songs and took risks. It paid off and now Queen is considered one of the greatest bands of all time. This is a great lesson for New Direction to learn.

    The Playlist

We are the Champions (New Directions)
Anything fancy would make this seem cocky and wrong. But it being sung on the bus on the way home after winning Regionals? Tons of fun.

    Bohemian Rhapsody (New Directions)
This song as their finale number at the end of the episode? Completely epic.

We Will Rock You (New Directions)
I want this to be a guys vs. girls show down in the choir room. We need more showdowns.

    Under Pressure (Finn and Rachel)
I think a stripped down version of this song with these two in the choir room would be sublime. Since Finn and Rachel are the leaders of the glee club, have school pressures, parent pressure and romantic pressure, there’s a million ways to work this song into the show.

Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Will & the New Directions boys)
I want the boys to sing this one. They could be in the choir room, completely confused about why the girls are acting the way they are. Will comes along, and decides the best thing to do is offer them advice in song. The advice? Just roll with it, ’cause love is crazy.

Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy (Kurt)
When New Directions is struggling with the concept of making art, Kurt sings this song to demonstrate he’s comfortable with who he is, and as a result, can sing this ridiculous but catchy tune.

Don’t Stop Me Now (Will with New Directions backup)
Will, on a high from good advice and in a good romantic place, sings this song to celebrate his confidence and success.

    Fat Bottomed Girls (Mercedes)
Since this episode will be about being true to yourself, Mercedes will once again address the weight issue. She’s a confident gal who likes who she is and what she looks like. What better way to pay homage to this than using Queen’s song about a larger lady?

Another One Bites the Dust (Jesse St. James w. backup)
I don’t care if Jesse sings this with ND or VA, I think he has the voice for it. If he’s with VA, he can sing it tauntingly, as if New Directions doesn’t stand a chance. If he’s still with New Directions, it can be about acing solo or a test or Rachel’s heart.

You’re My Best Friend (Rachel and Finn)
Finn still pines for Rachel, but the two are actually in a good place. When he tries one more time to declare his feeling for her, Rachel uses this song to show that even though she’s with Jesse, she has strong feelings for Finn.

If you missed them, check out the posts on Michael Jackson, Cher, The Rolling Stones and Stephen Sondheim.

    May 3rd, 2010Erin (Glee Dork)Music

It’s round four of 10 Artists Worthy of a Glee Tribute Episode and we’re going to turn to one musical arena that Glee owes a lot too: Broadway! And, specifically, the Broadway great, Stephen Sondheim.

60th Annual Tony Awards At Radio City Music Hall - Show

    Why Stephen Sondheim?

I know that Stephen Sondheim isn’t really an artist, he’s a songwriter. But he’s shaped Broadway and has dozens of hit musicals to his name (Sweeney Todd, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and West Side Story among them). Given this (and the fact his 80th birthday is this year!) he deserves a Glee tribute. Glee does Broadway very well, and owes the theatre industry a lot. It would be a wonderful way to pay homage to a huge Broadway influence while introducing Glee fans to more Broadway numbers. Since love is universal, the episode could be about love, finding love, losing love and being ready for love, as well as about how Broadway uses song to advance plot in a way pop music doesn’t.

    The Playlist

Love is in the Air (New Directions)
This song is probably Sondheim’s best known, which makes it a perfect ensemble number. At the end of the episode, when everything is seemingly resolved (this episode can also be a very special Valentine’s Day episode, if you want!), the group performs this because, well, it’s fun!

    Being Alive (Will)
“Being Alive”, from the musical Company, is the show’s big finale number. Company deals with Bobby, an man with commitment issues. In this episode, Will could be torn between Emma and Shelby, and comes to the realization that Emma is his one true love. The result? A serenade, of course!

You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow / Love Will See Us Through (Will/Emma, Rachel/Finn, Artie/Tina)
Oh “Like a Virgin.” It’s success makes me long for complicated multiple-duetted numbers. “You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow / Love Will See Us Through” from Follies is the perfect song for people confused by their relationships. Emma’s voice lends itself really well to these big old-school numbers (remember “I Could Have Danced All Night?) and Artie and Tina would have so much fun with a number like this!

Epiphany (Artie, Tina, Rachel, Quinn, Mike, Matt)
Here’s what’s happens: Will challenges New Directions to put together a true Sondheim number and randomly puts groups together. “Epiphany” is arguably the best song from Sondheim’s best musical, Sweeney Todd, and it would be fun to see this group perform together and produce a very Broadway number. This song is over-the-top and very expressive, so I can see Rachel, Tina and Artie having tons of fun with the concept and Mike and Matt getting into it in the chorus and with complicated dance moves.

Together (Wherever We Go) (Mercedes, Kurt, Brittany, Santana, Puck, Finn)
This can be the other showdown song choice, selected (obviously) by Kurt. The song can reinforce the BFF-ness of Mercedes and Kurt and Brittany and Santana but also be used to reconcile Finn and Puck, as the two realize how long they’ve been friends and how often they’ve been there for each other.

    Somewhere (Rachel)
Glee has already tackled one of the great West Side Story songs (when Tina sang “Tonight”), so here’s their chance to do justice to an amazing musical. Maria sings the first few lines after Tony dies, so Rachel can sing this number after Finn does something stupid. Many artists recorded this number, including Barbra Streisand, so it’s perfect for Rachel.

    Send in the Clowns (Tina)
This quiet song from A Little Night Music is the perfect song for Tina to head up. Sondheim is all about defying convention, so Will gives Tina this solo for the same reasons he gave her the solo way back when: to shake things up, amp up the confidence of others and to get other people in New Directions comfortable with big Broadway songs.

    Sooner or Later (Mercedes/Kurt)
This song won Sondheim the Academy Award for Best Original Song. It’s beautiful, playful and was originally recorded by Madonna. Being the Glee overachievers they are, Kurt and Mercedes decide to take it upon themselves to produce their own Sondheim number for the group.

    No More (Will/Finn)
Since Will and Finn closely resemble a father/son relationship (although I’d love for Kurt and Burt to give this one a go!), Glee’s main men can sing this song after they let each other down: Will for giving Finn bad advice and Finn for purposely making a poor decision.

Not a Day Goes By (Emma)
Emma takes a cue from Will’s glee lessons and tries to sort out her feelings through song. The genius of this number is that it can be seen as happy or sad, which results in Emma being as confused as she was before she sang it!

    May 2nd, 2010Erin (Glee Dork)Music

In this third edition of 10 Artists Worthy of a Glee Tribute Episode, we look at one of the greatest rock-n-roll bands of all time: The Rolling Stones. Glee has already covered the Stones (“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” was epic), so we know it’s a great match!

Rolling Stones in Milan - First Concert

    Why the Rolling Stones?

The Rolling Stones epitomize rock-n-roll. No band has partied harder, bedded more models, bore more children, and played more concerts than the Stones. Everyone in the band is a legend in their own right. And their songs are fun. The episode can be about how fame changes people and their relationships. Does the band come first, or your friends and family? How many sacrifices can you make for the band before its too many? How do your relationships change as you become increasingly famous? There’s a lot Glee could explore on a personal level, while trying to figure out what exactly defines a rock star–their music, their perseverance or their personal lives?

    The Playlist

(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction (Finn)
Now that Finn is doing his best to win Rachel over and stepping up to be ND’s leader, he’ll be frustrated by the lack of respect and progress he’s making on both fronts. The result? This song!

    Gimme Shelter (New Directions)
This would be a great choice for a choir room performance, especially if they let Artie or Puck take the lead vocals on this. Artie could use it to send a message to the rest of New Directions-if they let their fame and success go to their heads, they could end up in big trouble.

Brown Sugar (The boys of ND)
Their success inspired a newfound bravado in the glee club boys, and when Will challenges New Directions to a boys vs. girls Rolling Stone showdown, this is the song the boys pick!

    Wild Horses (Rachel/Finn duet)
What better Rolling Stones song captures the up and downs of Rachel and Finn’s relationship than Wild Horses? None, I say!

Let’s Spend the Night Together (Will)
After much romantic turmoil, Will feels that he and Emma are finally ready to take it to the next step. Instead of romancing her with a ballad like “Hello,” he decides to go the playful route to loosen Emma up and serenades her with this ditty.

Start Me Up (The girls of ND)
I love this song and think Rachel, Mercedes and the rest of the girls would have a lot of fun performing this in their boys v. girls challenge.

    Paint It, Black (New Directions)
This song is so much fun to listen too and multiple vocals would add a layer of complexity to this dark song. I’d love for the episode to end on this song, but that would be a bit depressing, wouldn’t it?

    Angie (Finn/Will duet)
After their respective attempts to musically woo Rachel and Emma go awry, Finn and Will sing this song separately, in sadness, as a way to deal with their losses.

    Ruby Tuesday (Puck)
Puck would do a great job of a stripped down “Ruby Tuesday” in choir practice. He finally realizes he can’t be the man Quinn wants him to be and this is his way to acknowledge that.

(If you missed out, check out the posts on Michael Jackson and Cher.)

    April 30th, 2010Erin (Glee Dork)Fun

Now that season one of Glee is wrapped, we’ll start to see more Glee kids on the covers of magazines! Especially September issues, so they can promo season two! The Glee gang has been in tons of magazines, but have yet to score a cover of a truly national mag.

InStyle & 20th Century Fox Celebrate Glee s Golden Globe Nominations

Here’s my dream September 2010 cover girl line-up:

    Cosmopolitan: Heather & Naya
Naya loves to do the sexy thing (her Maxim photo shoot certainly proved that!) so she can be sexy and talk sex while reinforcing the importance of friendship with a cover with Heather! The photo shoot would be adorable: the two of them in cute dresses doing a pseudo-slumber party and girls night out!

    Elle: Lea Michele
Lea looked amazing in the Elle spread a little while ago. I’ve love to see her in a high-fashion photo story, with dramatic, glamorous looks. Maybe Cory and Jon can make a guest appearance!

    Shape: Dianna Agron
Dianna strikes me as a girl who takes care of herself and would love to help others out! She’s gorgeous and has a great body, but looks healthy. I’d love to see her in an active photo shoot, sharing her favorite workout secrets.

    In Style: Jayma Mays
In Style skews a bit older, making it the perfect magazine to put Jayma on! (I’m not saying Jayma’s old! Rather, I know she’s a favorite among Glee’s older fans!). They could do an adorable photo shoot and profile piece about her cute home life with husband Adam. Imagine putting Jayma in glorious gowns? Perfection!

    Esquire: Matthew Morrison
Matthew Morrison has a dark side. He touches on it in interviews, with the way he’s not comfortable with fame, prefers Broadway, and has a romantic past he doesn’t like to talk about. An Esquire profile would really bring out this side and protray Matt as a complex individual in a way we’ve never seen before.

    Interview: Chris Colfer
Interview’s photo shoots are always high concept and mind-blowingly gorgeous. I’d love to see them take a stab at Chris and interview him so that he talks about stuff he’s never talked about before. I love the boy, but I don’t need to hear that “I was bullied in high school. I never forget.” line again.

    Glamour: Amber Riley
Glamour is the lady mag queen of celebrating women of all shapes and sizes, making them a great match for Amber. She could talk about empowerment and confidence and do an adorably girly shoot, perhaps with men fawning over her! I’d love it!

What’s your dream Glee cast cover match?

    April 29th, 2010Erin (Glee Dork)Music

The second installment of 10 Artists Worthy of a Glee Tribute is here! And the nominee? Why Cher of course! (If you missed the first installment, you can check it out here.)

Cher In Black Headdress At Oscars

    Why Cher?

I’ve been thinking hard about this list, as I want a nice mix of bands and solo artists, and of men and women. And Cher just keeps coming back. So why wouldn’t she be worthy of a Glee tribute? Her catalogue is as long and diverse as Madonna’s. The episode could be about perseverance. Cher’s been through a lot of crap, but through it all, she keeps pushing forward and keeps making art. There’s a great lesson in that for high school kids, and one that would work well for an episode of Glee.

    The Playlist

    I Got You Babe (A Finn/Rachel, Tina/Artie, Emma/Will mash-up)
How cute would it be to see these couples go through some struggles, only to come back stronger than ever? I think this song would work really well with a “Like a Virgin” type mash-up, only softer and simpler, as the song itself is soft and simple.

    Believe (Rachel)
Here’s the real Glee question: what song can’t Rachel Berry sing? If the episode is about perseverance, Finn and Rachel could have a fight and Rachel questions her role as a boyfriend-less girl. Hence, this power anthem about moving on. Backed up, of course, by her lovely New Directions lady friends.

The Shoop-Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss) (The ND girls)
Mercedes is confused about a boy and the girls use this song to explain how she’ll know she’s the one. I see this song as a fun chorus room jam, nothing fancy. Just great voices and loads of fun.

    After All (Will and Shelby)
This song is a classic Cher duet. It’ a bit mature for the ND kids, but would love to see Will tackle this with a romantic lead.

Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves (New Directions)
Shouldn’t the ultimate McKinley High outcasts sing Cher’s epic song about wanting acceptance and love. Besides, it would give Kurt a chance to wear that exotic headdress he’s been so longing to wear.

If I Could Turn Back Time (New Directions)
This has to be ND’s finale song. It’s Cher’s signature song and a big arrangement with this number could blow off rooftops, especially with Rachel, Jesse and Mercedes trading off lead vocals.

The Beat Goes On (New Directions)
Everyone could take turns with the lead vocal. It’s such a simple song that Adam Anders could have fun with the vocal arrangements as well.

    Heart of Stone (Will)
This painful love song needs a mournful solo, maybe with some ND backup. Will has enough love trouble, he could sing this one really well, as long as the girls helped him out on the chorus!

Just Like Jesse James (Quinn w/ Cheerios backup)
Quinn is dating the ultimate bad boy and this song fits well with her relationship with Puck. However, since Rachel is dating Jesse St. James, she would probably get this one.

I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (New Directions)
This would be another great production number for New Directions, as they learn that they learn that life is a journey and you just keep moving forward.

    April 28th, 2010Erin (Glee Dork)Music

I’ve been thinking a lot about the Madonna tribute episode.Heck, I’ve already written a post about it. But I do, honestly and truly, believe that an annual tribute episode would be amazing. (If it was done correctly, that is!) As long as the artists were truly iconic and had a diverse catalogue, I’m game. So here, Ryan Murphy. I will be making 10 suggestions and I strongly recommend you follow them. And I know you will. You stole your Neil Patrick Harris idea from me after all.

    First up, Michael Jackson!

This is what it could look like:

    Why Michael?

Michael was recording artist for almost 50 years. That gives Ryan Murphy a huge body of music to select from, meaning there’s definitely something for everyone. Even after his death, Michael remains a polarizing and pivotal artist, who changed popular music forever. They don’t call him the King of Pop for nothing. Since the Madonna episode explored what Madonna represented as an artist, the Michael Jackson episode would have to examine Michael’s icon status and the controversy surrounding his life. The episode could deal with sudden fame, or with whether New Directions’ personal lives should affect their group and how the judges, Mr. Schuester and their fans see them. Besides, can you imagine the costumes for this episode? That alone would make this worth it.

    The Playlist

Black or White (Kurt & Mercedes)
This pick is waaaaay too easy. But imagine how much fun our favorite McKinley BFFs would have with this song about accepting diversity?

Man in the Mirror (Artie and New Directions)
I think Artie has the voice to make this song truly his. He could sing it after another Tina/Artie blowout or after meeting someone worse off than he is and getting self-righteous, then feeling bad. Will Schuester could also see this song, after realizing what a man-whore he’s been. ND would have to back them up to make this a number you won’t easily forget.

    Thriller (New Directions)
Can you imagine the zombie-inspired costumes? The dance moves? Can we say EPIC?

    Scream (Finn and Rachel)
This on-again off-again couple frustrates the hell out of each other. It doesn’t help that most of New Directions’ success relies on their leadership and talent? This song is outside their comfort zone, but I think they could nail it.

    Billie Jean (Finn)
Finn could accidentally lead someone on and then realize what a mistake he made. Bam, this song.

    ABC (New Directions)
This would just be fun. And we need a shout-out to just how cute Michael used to be!

    Off the Wall (Will)
He can use this song to seduce one of his many conquests to demonstrate just how much fun singing Michael Jackson’s music can be.

Smooth Criminal (The boys of New Directions)
This is just a fun song and it would be cool to see the guys let loose after the heavy “What it Feels Like for a Girl.”

Beat It (The girls of New Directions)
How fun would it be if the girls got another tell-off song? Their rendition of “Express Yourself” was fantastic and I think they could have fun with an all-girls version of this one.

    April 28th, 2010Erin (Glee Dork)Home

Here’s my top ten first impressions from the show last night:

    1) Enough with the heavy handed themes!

In the first thirteen episodes (with the exception of Hairography), the title of the episode was rarely mentioned. Central themes were everywhere, but never were they as literal as they were last night. How many times did the cast say “Home?” And did we really need to turn that “a chair is still a chair” line into a literal plot point?

    2) Too much April Rhodes

Don’t get me wrong: I love me some April. But her reintroduction was a stretch, she gets three songs (and Rachel gets ONE line), and has to learn the same lesson she learned during her first appearance?

    3) Where’s Rachel?

I love when the secondary characters get storylines of their own. But in this episode, every secondary character, even Brittany and Santana, had more lines than Rachel. It was a bit jarring for her to be so relegated to the background.

    4) The Music

I loved the more Broadway feel of this episode, but can’t help but wonder if Fox executives are upset by this move. I doubt that Will and April’s rendition of “One Less Bell to Ring” will sell as much as “Express Yourself.” But we’ll have to wait and see.

    5) The musical numbers
Ryan Murphy has been adamant that the music be embedded in fantasy or performance. If that’s the case, then what was up with that aforementioned song? It was beautiful, but a borderline traditional musical number. No one, not even Will Schuester, sings in bed like that.

    6) Mercedes
I love Mercedes, but she’s treated really inconsistently. Is she the overconfident diva that will cut you if you insult her? Or is she quietly insecure, desperate for popularity and will do anything to get it? Sometimes it’s the former and sometimes it’s the latter. Sue Sylvester has power, but a little more exploration into the psyche of Mercedes would go a long way.

    7) Burt and Carole’s romance
While sweet, came out of nowhere and moved FAST. Declarations of heroism and never hurting them ever after being together for only a month? Are they in high school?

    8 ) Burt’s speech
Despite how fast it moved, Burt’s speech was sweet and his conversation with Kurt was heartbreaking. I love Kurt and Burt together and would love to see more of them. Mike O’Malley rocks.

    9) The roller rink
I still, still, don’t understand why the glee club just couldn’t practice in the choir room.

    10) Taking things too far
I liked this episode, it was solid. But, they pushed it too far. Burt’s speech was nice. Finn letting him sit in his father’s chair was nice. But then the urn! And Kurt in the window! Too much!
